Ceramic Implants

Titanium or Ceramic?

In the past Titanium implants have been used with great success to replace missing teeth, and there is no question that they have the long term data to support their use. Titanium is a safe and very reliable option and they are a top choice with dentists because they are very strong, have longevity, and integrate with the bone very well.

But what if a titanium implant isn’t the right choice for you? For our patients that are allergic or sensitive to metal, or those that prefer to practice a more holistic way of living, we are pleased to offer ceramic implants. You may have also heard the term Zirconia implant being used and you can be assured that these are one in the same. Zirconia dental implants are made from special, industrial, high impact resistant ceramic (zirconium oxide, ZrO2) that is customarily used in aerospace engineering because of its high resistance to fracture and heat. To provide our patients with the best quality, Dr Yu currently uses both the Ceraroot Implant System, a global leader in metal-free, holistic and esthetic implant dentistry, as well as Straumann Pure implants.

Because they are highly bio compatible with the human body, high-impact ceramic implants provide a viable alternative to metal (titanium) implants. Ceramic implants have already made their mark for years in Europe and South America. Studies show that the osseointegration—the process of bone growing right up to the implant surface—of zirconia and titanium implants is very similar, and that zirconia implants have a comparable survival rate, making them an excellent alternative to metal implants.

If, like many others, you feel that a ceramic implant is the choice for you, please contact our office for a consultation. During these consultation visits, Dr. Yu and his staff will address your specific needs and considerations. Your questions and concerns are important to us and our team will work with you very closely to help make your procedure a success.
